What Does It Take To Win A Strategy Game?

ImageStrategy games require a combination of technical skills and the ability to think logically, anticipating your opponent’s next move while plotting your own course of action. Unlike first person shooter games where all you’re trying to do is mindlessly kill your way to the next level, strategy games challenge you to think if you want to progress.

You’ve probably heard of World of Warcraft, one of the most popular online strategy games, and Starcraft 2 and Dota 2 (Defense of the Ancients). These are all challenging games that feature warrior-type characters so that’s how most people picture strategy games. Online worlds filled with gladiators and warlocks and mythical creatures, all doing battle for control of the realm.

But it might interest you to know that games like NeoPets and Diner Dash and even Cityville and Farmville are also strategy games. One thing these games all have in common is the need for the player to be able to set goals and create a strategy to reach those goals.

Typically players earn some type of coin or gold in these games and they have to use that ‘money’ to purchase materials or weapons to help them reach their next goal. They may have to perform certain timed tasks to earn the money or defeat a certain enemy or monster. There’s a whole series of steps to take to go from point A to point B and your success relies on two things – your technical skills and you’re ability to visualize a strategy.

With games like Starcraft 2 and Dota 2 the mistake that most players make is they try to amass huge fortunes when it’s really not necessary. Nobody ever won a battle because they had more coins or gold or money than their opponent. They win because they have better weapons and armor.

And that’s where the strategy comes in. To progress through the levels of these games players need to be able to plot the best way to earn the gold they need to purchase the weapons and armor they need to conquer the next obstacle. To keep moving forward forget about trying to amass a fortune for a rainy day. Once you start trying to save money you’re stuck.

And typically, the next obstacle is a monster or mob or warrior, which is where the need for technical skills comes into play. To earn the money to buy weapons you might have to grow some crops or find and sell a potion and you can work at your own pace.

When playing Starcraft 2 players have to farm to earn gold and experience points. In order to farm, though, you have to kill creeps. To kill those creeps you need to be able to move quickly around the map which means you need to know the best map routes and be able to quickly navigate around obstacles. To kill the enemy you not only need weapons and armor you need to have the skills to use them quickly. You have time to wait for your crops to grow but when you’re under attack you need to react.

Strategy games are all about acquiring skills and being able to recognize when to put them to use. For example when you’re playing Starcraft 2 you’ll need to understand Ganking, which requires teamwork. And teamwork is a popular strategy in a lot of games, especially World of Warcraft.

But whether you’re working as part of a team or you’re the lone gunman, all strategy games eventually come down to skill. Before you can progress to the next level or conquer that hill or add in more tables in your diner you’re going to have to beat or kill or serve something and you’re going to have to have lightning fast, precision skills.

Serious strategy game players spend hours or even entire days at their computers, trying to conquer the next level. They’re also serious about their gaming equipment. Most use high-tech gaming mouses to help improve their gameplay. And the best gaming mouse is the Razer Deathadder Infrared Gaming Mouse.

Ask any gamer what’s the best feature of the Razer Deathadder and he’ll tell you one of two things – it’s either the ergonomically designed grip or the infrared laser technology.

Playing any game for hours on end can cause a lot of discomfort in your hand. And just about the time you need to be at the top of your game that’s when your hand cramps up and you couldn’t land a shot if your life depended on it. (Which it DOES, by the way!) The ergonomic design of the Razer Deathadder provides maximum comfort. No matter how long you play and no matter how intense the action you’re always able to play your best.

When it comes time to battle you need precision accuracy. The standard optical mouse that comes with every computer is fine for kids playing Farmville. But serious creep killing in Starcraft 2 means you need to get your shots off fast and they need to be accurate – you don’t get a second chance. The infrared sensors in the Razer Deathadeer mean it’s four times more accurate than the standard mouse.

The Razer is also the best Starcraft 2 gaming mouse has an advanced execution time of 1000HZ with their Ultrapolling technology. This gives you a response time of 1ms compared to 8ms with a standard mouse. That 7ms difference might not seem like much to you right now, but it will when you’re defending your farm in Starcraft 2.
